Welcome back to another exciting school year! Our system theme is "Reasons to Celebrate" and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate the arts in Regina Catholic Schools. From our highly successful band program, to the system wide choral Christmas concert and all the wonderful arts experiences happening in our schools Pre-K-Gr.12 , the arts are alive in Regina Catholic Schools! If you are doing something noteworthy or exciting in arts education this year, or you know someone who is (we're so humble sometimes!), please don't hesitate to let me know and we will post your great lesson or come out and film it!
My Arts Education Wish 2009-2010: 6 Words Every Arts Ed Teacher Should Know!
Whether you teach pre-k or grade 12 or anything in between, there are six words in the arts education curriculum which essentially encompass the goals of arts education. If nothing else, all teachers teaching arts education should know these 6 words!
1) CP: CREATIVE/PRODUCTIVE: students inquire, compose, create, reflect and communicate through dance, drama, visual arts and music.
2) CH: CULTURAL/HISTOICAL: students investigate content and aesthetics of the arts within acultural, historical and contemporary contexts and understand the connection between the arts and human experience.
3) CR: CRITICAL/RESPONSIVE: students respond to artistic expressions of Saskatchewan, Canadian and international artists using critical thinking, research, and collaborative inquiry to infer and comprehend meanings.

WHY I TEACH ARTS EDUCATION
Not because I expect you to be an artist or major in music, be an actor or a dancer. Not because I expect you to paint, sing, act or dance for the rest of your life. Not so you can just play around and have fun But...So you will be human. So you will recognize beauty. So you will be sensitive. So you will be complete. So you will understand things that surpass the boundaries of this world. So you will not be afraid to take risks. So you will have an appreciation for difference. So you will embrace each new life experience without hesitation. So you will know ways to express yourself. So you will have more love more compassion more gentleness In short...more LIFE!Where will you find meaning in your life unless you know how to live?-Author Unknown -Adapted by Michelle Richter and Pamela Seifert
